“No, I won’t be scared,” I thought to myself as I mustered the courage to climb up onto the roof to help paint the roof edges. I could feel my fear of heights and shaky confidence try to grab hold of me again. I didn’t want to be afraid. I want to be brave and useful. Somehow, walking on all fours across our angled roof to get to the roof edges didn’t strike me as all that effective. No, I had to straighten up my back and walk boldly across the roof.
Don’t get me wrong. It took every ounce of willpower to stare my fear of heights and fear of falling into the eyes and give it a sassy attitude. So, each time fear came to call, I went on ignoring. By the end of my little job (painting the edges of the roof boards), I felt empowered and more confident. I did it. I walked on my roof (not crawled).
Face your fears
I remember reading recently that the best way to build confidence is to keep doing that which you are not experienced in or good at. The more you do it, the more familiar this task or activity becomes. Familiarity builds confidence and reduces fear. ( You can read my post on the purpose of faith here and overcoming fear here).

While this is true, I’d like to take you a bit deeper than merely repeating an activity over and over again until it becomes second nature. You and I need to know who we are in Christ and what he has given us. This revelation is what will help us to endure past the fear, anxiety, and worry so we can develop a confident identity in the Lord. God, my source of peace, confidence, and faith.
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMP)
Fear is not of God. Peace, confidence, security, and love are all from God. This is what God wants us to live in every moment of our lives.
I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.] Philippians 4:13 (AMP)
Become more dependent on Jesus
Our relationship with God is characterized by our dependency on Him. We can say to Jesus “God, my source for all I need”. The beauty of this comes in the reality of not being disappointed, put to shame, or missing out. When we lack strength or peace, we can step closer to the Lord’s heart to draw on His grace, strength, and peace.
Jesus in his loving mercy carries us in those moments when we can’t go on any longer. We surrender. Not out of apathy or surrender to our circumstances but out of a heart surrendered to Him. These are the times we hear and experience God’s heart saying It’s ok! Where you can’t, I can. Rest in me.
So, we take a deep breath and let go our need to control, realizing control is merely an illusion. (The only thing you can control is You!) Trust is birthed and developed. We stop relying on our own self-sufficiency and resources so we are open to the infinite wisdom and abundance found in Him.
Trust Him!
In the same way that I had to trust the roof would not break under my feet, we need to trust in God’s heart for us. He will not let us down. He is always going to fulfill his promises and measure up to his name. He is I AM! I AM the Lord who heals you; I AM the Lord your provider; I AM the Lord your peace. I AM with you always. He is God, my source for all that I need in this life and more.
