You Get What You Focus On – Watch where you look

This week was one of those weeks where my spirit was discerning a lot of spiritual activity in the spiritual atmosphere. I get weeks like this. A heaviness falls and I struggle to get out of it. The truth is I don’t have to live in a heavy spiritual atmosphere because God has made me and you overcomers. Still, I am learning discernment.

I attended Wednesday prayer meeting at my church desperate for some time with the Lord in a corporate setting. I was already noise sensitive and agitated. Honestly, I didn’t get much out of that prayer meeting. In some ways, I felt worse off, that maybe I should’ve stayed at home.

As I sat listening to the short teaching and feebly attempting to worship Jesus, the Lord showed me this beautiful picture of balloons full of helium rising up far away never to be seen again. Jesus whispered to my spirit Hot air rises. Heaviness rises up like helium balloons to give way to my presence. That which is not of me moves aside so that my presence can come in.You get what you focus on pinterest

I loved that. Worship is our warfare. It takes on many forms such as praise, thankfulness, reading the Bible, keeping our minds fixed on Him who is perfect. This is how we can move out of that heavy, depressed, lonely state. Yes, there is a spiritual war raging around us between heaven and hell:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

The good news is we are on the winning side. We choose to partner with Jesus and all of heaven where peace, joy, hope, and life flow forever.

Often, the best thing we can do is to stop focusing on how the enemy is after us (yes he is against us) and start focusing on Jesus. This is part of resisting the devil. Personally, I believe we give the devil way too much attention. No, I turn my gaze to Jesus. If I don’t know what to pray, I can pray in the spirit whether it be quietly or loudly.

I want Jesus to be all that I see. When he is all I can see, I gain a better perspective on what is happening around me and how to pray.

What are you focusing on?

What we focus on becomes an idol in our life. If we focus on God, we are allowing him to fill our minds, hearts, and lives with His perspective and Kingdom. This allows us to have a higher understanding of what is happening around us. We begin to see hope in what can be a dismal situation. We see the good in people instead of their fault and misgivings.

On the other hand, if we focus on what is going wrong, the injustices sent our way, our anxieties, and more, those things are given a foothold in our lives. They begin to dictate to us how we should live and the perspective we should have. Our power is removed from us. So, we become victims of our circumstances and the behaviors of others.

Surely, God wants us to live in victory and be the powerful people he created us to be?

Whether we are going through tough times, discerning spiritual atmospheres or dealing with our stuff, we have a choice to make. We can choose to live powerful because of the hope God gives us or we can choose to allow our circumstances and the behaviors of the people around us to render us powerless, hopeless, and miserable.

What is your choice?

I don’t know about you, but I want to continue living in the truth of who God has made me be. If I am His daughter, then I have the authority to tell the mountains I face to be cast into the sea. I choose to fill my gaze with Jesus. So, I take every thought captive and subject it to Christ; and I, allow my heart to receive His encouragement and promises.

The helium balloons carrying my flaws, circumstances, etc., rise up and disappear out of my sight. I can finally breathe the oxygen of heaven. I breathe in hope, peace, promise, and rest.
