Who are God’s angels? A peek into heaven

Who are God’s angels? I’ll never forget the time God showed me, angels. I was about twelve years old and had been reading a book on angels – the different types, their roles, etc. This was around the same time that I was old enough to begin reading Frank Peretti’s books This Present Darkness and Chasing the Darkness.  I was both mesmerized and terrified at the same time. Yet, my curiosity always won and I regularly found myself asking God to help me understand. I suppose, in some way, God had created me with a desire for more than just the physical world we live in. I wanted to understand the spiritual realm and still do.

It so happened, that night, I couldn’t fall asleep. I wasn’t allowed to read in the dark (even though I regularly shuffled to the bottom of my bed to catch a small beam of light on my book and read, much to my dear mother’s exasperation). In my attempts to be the obedient and compliant child that I am, I decided that I needed to speak to the Lord about angels. One of the many things I love about God is his willingness to encounter us.

As I lay with my eyes closed, my heart communicating with my best friend, God began to paint in an almost dream-like fashion his world of heaven and angels. Some were massive, others had wings, while some were without wings. I saw a world of angel armies as unique and different as we are.

Who are God’s angels?

I love how God always matches his encounters with us to His word. Hebrews is one of my favorite references when it comes to understanding who are God’s angels:

He makes his angels spirits, and his servants’ flames of fire. Hebrews 1:7

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? Hebrews 1: 14

who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities, and powers in submission to him. 1 Peter 3:22

You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, Hebrews 12:22b

And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” Hebrews 1:6

These Scriptures begin to paint a picture of what the angel armies of heaven look like. Angels are:

  • Ministering spirits
  • Powerful beings submitted to God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit
  • A joyful assembly
  • Worship God
  • Flames of fire

Because the angels of God are constantly in His presence, they are able to release more of God’s glory when we are in times of prayer and worship, either individually and/or corporately. Our praise, worship, and prayer create an atmosphere of God’s presence which, in turn, attracts and releases the angelic into our midst. We don’t always know what God has assigned angels to do; but, I can tell you with certainty that our prayers and partnering with God releases the angels into fulfilling their missions.

Types of angels

Some of the types of angels listed in the Bible include:Who are God's angels-Living Fiercely Loved

  • Cherubim – Ezekiel 10
  • Seraphim – Isaiah 6
  • Archangels – Jude 9
  • Guardian angels – Psalm 91
  • Protection angels – Psalm 91
  • Ministering angels – Hebrews 1

Then you get other angels who are not so clearly “listed” in the Bible but who are real (imagine if God had to write a book on all the different types of angels and their role – you’d probably have a whole library of them lol):

  • Warrior angels
  • Intercession angels
  • Sentry angels
  • Herald angels
  • Songwriting angels
  • Worshiping angels
  • Writing angels
  • Deep Heaven angels
  • Watchmen angels

The list could go on. My point is this: Allow Holy Spirit to expand and teach you who are the angels of God, their functions, and so on. As long as the Lord is teaching you, it’s safe. Although the Bible doesn’t list the many types of angels, I personally believe that the angels are as vast as the human race. So, if we need help in our jobs, we can ask God to release those angels that can help us get our job done.

Partnering with God’s angels

I believe that partnering with God’s angels is part of our spiritual warfare. As we see from the above section, God’s angels are to protect us, minister to us, work with us. We can ask God to send us his angels to help us with those things we need help with.

Once we understand who are God’s angels, we can begin to work with them. This means through our prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and warfare. Prayer is the best way to partner with God’s angel armies. Our prayers and use of Scripture releases the angels to do the missions that God has assigned them to do. As we become more aware of who are God’s angels, we are able to ask God to release the relevant angels to help us as we go through life and trust for a breakthrough.

Earlier this year we had someone come to our office regarding their account which was in arrears. This person carried a lot of intimidation and other stuff although they didn’t shout or say anything untoward. However, I had a few minutes prior to them coming to my office asked God to send me an angel to watch over me. Later on in the day, I kept feeling like someone (much larger than me) was standing near me. I went to home group that night and my home group leader asked me “Who is with you?”  I replied, “Its the angel God sent to me because I asked him for one”.

Another example: My eldest boy was about four years old at the time and battling with bad dreams and monsters. We prayed and asked God for a protection angel to stand in his bedroom doorway to protect him.For the next long while, I could tell someone very large and tall was standing in the doorway. When I asked God who it was he reminded me of our prayer. He had sent a protection angel.

Heaven waits for us to work with them to fulfill the work of God on earth. So often, we think that God is going to do it and we miss the part where God wants to answer our prayers with us. We have a significant role to play in releasing breakthrough and the angel armies into their assignments.

I love the thought of angels. I’m so grateful the Lord has them to protect us and to point us to Him!

I like this line: “Because the angels of God are constantly in His presence, they are able to release more of God’s glory when we are in times of prayer and worship…” What a comforting thought! This is an intriguing look at something I don’t often think about. Thanks!

I’m glad you enjoyed it April. I love that we are not alone.

I’ve always been fascinated by angels, and I believe in their protection over our lives. I’m always cautious when reading other’s opinions on angels, but I love how you turn to scripture to back up what you say.

    • ailie 29th March 2017 at 09:50

Thanks Emily. Yes, I think there is a lot of stuff out there that is deserving of caution. Fortunately, we can turn to scripture to confirm what we believe, see, or experience. There’s so much more for us to explore in God and with Him. 🙂

Thank you for sharing! Sometimes I forget about angels, but they are so important!

  6. Brooke 29th March 2017 at 12:19

You have a way with words. They’re easy to read and I enjoyed reading this post!
It’s night time now where I live and I feel comforted knowing I can specifically ask God to send his protection angels to guard my sleeping children and I. When I listen to sermons about spiritual warfare, I’m normally thinking about my authority as a believer. Too often I’ve forgotten all about the roles of angels, or even that they exist! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

    • ailie 29th March 2017 at 12:51

Thanks so much Brooke. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 The beauty of it is that we have authority to release angels so the two work so beautifully together. I love how God always invites us deeper and reminds us that we don’t have to do everything by ourselves. 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Great blog post! I actually have that book but I haven’t read it yet, I’ll have to check it out! I’ve been praying to God to open my eyes to see angels.

Hi Kimberly. Awesome, you’ll enjoy it. I found it a great read and insightful. Trusting with you for God to take you to a greater level of discernment and seeing in the spirit
